01

Decide what the CAD user must receive

A replacement bracket usually needs accurate hole centers and mounting faces, not the texture of a worn casting. An enclosure designed around an existing object may only need the outer envelope. Write down which of the four results below you need before you compare hardware.

Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.

Required resultWhat to requestWhat does not prove it
Reference meshA scaled mesh with known units and orientation, opened in your CAD applicationA rotating preview with no export
Surface or solid geometryA STEP or IGES file that imports cleanly and passes a geometry checkThe file extension alone
Editable designA native CAD file in which the agreed dimensions change and the model rebuildsA solid that imports as one uneditable body
Dimensional acceptanceNamed features, reference measurements and a documented comparisonA green deviation map with an undisclosed alignment

Keep the tolerance separate from the smallest feature you need to capture. The accuracy guide explains how to turn a specification into questions a vendor can answer, and the scan-to-CAD workflow covers the production steps after you buy.

For reverse engineering you are buying two things: a scanner that captures the part, and software that turns the mesh into geometry your CAD system can edit. Most failed purchases fail at the second step. Judge every candidate by the file that ends up in your CAD application, not by the scan on the vendor's screen.

This guide is built from manufacturer pages and dated store listings checked on September 26, 2026. We have not scanned or reconstructed parts with these products ourselves.

Build a candidate list around the difficult part

These five scanners come from our dated catalog and span the main price classes. They are candidates for a demo, not a ranking. Ask every vendor to scan the same part.

EINSTAR 2$899 sale, US storeNo accuracy figure publishedLowest-cost laser and infrared option for small and medium partsDoes the exported geometry keep your smallest mounting features?
Creality Raptor Pro$1,499 sale, US storeUp to 0.02 mm in laser modesSeveral laser patterns for difficult mechanical partsWhich mode, markers and preparation does your part need?
Peel 3$6,170 introductoryUp to 0.050 mm; 0.050 mm + 0.100 mm/m volumetricPackaged professional workflow; Peel also sells a CAD-focused packageWhich reconstruction tools come with the package you are quoted?
Artec Leo$34,8000.1 mm point accuracy; 0.1 mm + 0.3 mm/m over distanceScans without a tethered computer around large objectsHow much processing and reconstruction work remains after capture?

The claims come from different test methods and cannot be ranked against each other. The scanner catalog holds the full dated records. For vehicle parts, the car-parts guide adds a specimen pack with a recess, a long span and real surface finishes.

Budget for reconstruction software, not just capture

Scanning software produces a mesh. Rebuilding editable features usually takes a separate reverse-engineering application or manual modeling in CAD. Price that software with the scanner, and check it against your CAD system and version.

SoftwareWhat it is forLicense and price checked Sep 26, 2026
Geomagic Design XDedicated reverse-engineering applicationSold by quote; ask for the edition, term and maintenance in writing
QUICKSURFACEReconstruction from mesh data with STEP and IGES exportLite €480 per year; Pro €1,700 per year, €3,995 for three years or €5,250 perpetual; a SOLIDWORKS add-in €1,100 per year or €3,300 perpetual. Prices are in euros on the official price page
Revo Design / Revo Design ProRevopoint's reconstruction softwareThe global store showed $540 for the one-year Revo Design license. Confirm region, tax and the Pro or permanent options at checkout
EXModel / EXModel ProSHINING 3D's mesh preparation and reconstruction softwareSold by quote; base and Pro editions differ in features
Autodesk FusionMesh conversion and manual feature modeling inside CADSome conversion methods need an extension; check your plan

Two cautions. A software price from one region is not a US quote. And a conversion step in Fusion's timeline does not recover the original designer's feature history; it creates new geometry from the mesh.

Compare the complete quote

Ask each vendor to price these lines separately. Leave any unanswered line as Unknown rather than assuming it is included.

Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.

Cost lineWhat to get in writing
Scanner and accessoriesExact SKU, calibration accessories, targets and warranty region
Capture and processingIncluded license, computer requirements and upgrade terms
CAD reconstructionProduct, edition, seats, term, supported CAD version and export rights
OperationTraining, preparation supplies and operator time for your representative part
Renewal and supportRenewal cost, maintenance, repair route and file access after a subscription ends

Compare first-year cost and yearly cost separately. Record the labor you saw in the demo, including rescans and manual modeling. Capture time alone says little about how many parts you can finish per week.

Reverse-engineering demo brief

Copy this request, fill in the brackets and send the same version to every vendor.

Please demonstrate the quoted scanner and software on [part and material], [overall size], with [critical features]. The deliverable is [native CAD / STEP / mesh] opened in [application and version]. Surface preparation is [allowed / not allowed]. Check [named dimensions] against [reference and its uncertainty] with [agreed limits]. Show one independent rescan and one agreed dimension change. Return the original scan, processed mesh, CAD file, comparison report, software versions and operator time by stage. Mark anything that falls outside the quoted license.

Accept or return the demo

  • Open the delivered file yourself and confirm the units before measuring.
  • Change the agreed dimension and rebuild. Note which features stay editable.
  • Look for missing areas and ask which geometry the operator filled in by hand.
  • Check critical dimensions under the agreed alignment, then repeat on the independent rescan.
  • Return any package where the required software or export rights are still unspecified. A failed demo is useful evidence; do not let it be hidden with extra smoothing.

To turn your requirements into a shortlist, use the selector. It narrows the list; it cannot confirm a scanner for your tolerance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 3D scanner for reverse engineering cost?

On September 26, 2026, the scanners above ranged from an $899 sale price for EINSTAR 2 to $34,800 for Artec Leo, with metrology systems sold by quote. Add reconstruction software: QUICKSURFACE listed yearly licenses from €480, and Geomagic Design X and EXModel are sold by quote. The full budget also includes a capable computer, training and operator time.

Can a 3D scanner create a CAD model directly?

No. A scanner produces points or a mesh. An editable CAD model comes from reconstruction software or manual modeling, and for mechanical parts that step often takes longer than the scan.

How we work

Research methodology

Official manuals, technical sheets and current product pages lead the evidence hierarchy. Missing fields stay visible as questions for the vendor.

  1. Define the object, output and acceptance method.
  2. Record calibration, software, workstation and operator.
  3. Compare the final deliverable under the same protocol.
  4. Keep failed scans and document every manual correction.

Published specifications describe manufacturer claims. A buyer test with your own object remains the final decision step.
