Application guide
3D scanners for reverse engineering
Plan the scanner, CAD reconstruction and final edit together. A useful scan-to-CAD system has to finish the change you need in your CAD app.
On this page
Start with the change you need to make
If you only need to model around a scan, request a mesh reference and check its import scale and missing geometry. If you need to change a hole or face, specify a valid editable solid; if you need a parameter-driven rebuild, specify native history. The existing CAD file exercise separates those last two operations with downloadable files. These exercises check files and software behavior, not scanner accuracy.
Then name the smallest functional feature, permitted markers/coating and the program that must use the exported file. Use the workflow configurations below as candidates, and choose your CAD deliverable and build a demo brief before asking for a full system quote. Keep each candidate provisional until it produces your required deliverable.
For reverse engineering you are buying a capture workflow, a reconstruction workflow and a usable CAD handoff. A good scan is not enough if the reconstruction software cannot produce the file your next task needs. Open the delivered file in your CAD app and judge the candidate by the edit or reference task you can complete.
The four configurations below combine official product, software and support documents with separately dated offers. The selected device, bundle and license offers were rechecked on October 14, 2026; older document review dates remain identified. Use these configurations as a starting list for a vendor test. We have not scanned or reconstructed a part with them. Confirm the installed versions, labor time, required dimensions and final edit in your CAD app.
Decide what the CAD user must receive
Compare the exact file and editing requirements
A replacement bracket usually needs accurate hole centers and mounting faces, not the texture of a worn casting. An enclosure designed around an existing object may only need the outer envelope. Write down the required geometry before comparing hardware. Inspection adds a measurement check; it does not define a more editable file type.
| Required result | What to request | What does not prove it |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh reference | A scaled mesh with known units and orientation, usable for the named reference task in your CAD application | A rotating preview with no export, or a mesh assumed to contain CAD features |
| Imported B-rep geometry for direct editing | STEP or IGES geometry that passes the required body checks and supports an agreed direct edit or added feature | The file extension alone, or an assumption that an absent feature tree makes every solid uneditable |
| Native parametric model | A native CAD file with named parameters and feature dependencies; change an agreed parameter and rebuild | A native extension containing only an imported body, or a successful STEP import with no original design history |
| Dimensional acceptance | Named features, reference measurements and a documented comparison | A green deviation map with an undisclosed alignment |
Keep the tolerance separate from the smallest feature you need to capture. The accuracy guide shows how to check point spacing and captured features separately, and the scan-to-CAD workflow covers the production steps after you buy.
Name the feature and the pass rule
Describe the part by its next use. Check its smallest bore, edge or wall separately from the scanner's stated minimum object size. The examples below are questions for a part test, not results from completed scanner trials.
| Required work | Name in the brief | Evidence the demo must return |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement bracket | Mounting face, hole centers and mating interface | The chosen datums, independent references and those same features in the delivered CAD |
| Enclosure around an object | Required envelope and clearance regions | Declared units, all relevant views and a check that the CAD task fits the captured coverage |
| Deep bore or pocket | Diameter, depth and which surfaces define them | Raw views showing optical access; identify any unobserved bottom or wall rather than filling it silently |
| Thin or flexible part | Thickness and supported condition | Both relevant faces and the fixture/loading condition; retain an independent thickness check |
| Worn or damaged part | Regions to reproduce and features to restore to nominal | A record separating measured geometry from inferred or redesigned geometry |
List the overall envelope, smallest functional feature and allowed dimensional difference as three separate inputs. If a feature cannot be observed with the permitted preparation and access, ask for an independent measurement or another capture method. A larger triangle count cannot supply missing geometry.
For a coated fit surface, include the coating dimension check. For a solid that must change in CAD, use the paired native-file exercise to distinguish a direct edit from a parameter-driven rebuild.
Four documented configurations to take to a demo
Read the four scanner and reconstruction configurations
These examples cover two handheld capture paths and two all-in-one capture paths with explicitly named reconstruction editions. They were selected because official sources document a mesh export and a separately identifiable software license, not because they won a common performance test. They are not a complete market comparison or proof that the full workflow works on your part.
Swipe or use Left and Right arrow keys to see every column.
| Exact configuration | Capture and mesh handoff | Reconstruction license | CAD result to request, not a recorded pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original CR-Scan Raptor base, blue-laser mode; not Raptor Pro or a Scan Bridge bundle | CrealityScan desktop; STL, OBJ or PLY | QUICKSURFACE Lite, one-year subscription, separately priced | Reconstruct the agreed surfaces or solid; deliver STEP or IGES and complete the planned edit in your CAD app |
| Original CR-Scan Otter base, infrared mode; no Scan Bridge Lite or turntable bundle | CrealityScan desktop; STL, OBJ or PLY | QUICKSURFACE Lite, one-year vendor subscription, separate from the scanner | Check tracking, fitting and closed STEP geometry where a solid is required; complete the same edit task |
| EINSTAR VEGA base, HD mode | Onboard capture; StarVision desktop postprocessing/export as needed; STL, OBJ, PLY or ASC | QUICKSURFACE Pro, one-year vendor subscription, separate from VEGA | Use a mesh export for reconstruction; request STEP for the agreed edit. Pro's documented Parasolid export is not proof of native CAD history |
| MIRACO Plus + RevoDesign one-year license, exact global-store bundle; verify PMK contents for the SKU | Onboard Revo Scan; transfer PMK processing to Revo Scan PC 5.4.12 or newer for the documented point-cloud/export handoff; mesh STL, OBJ or PLY | Revo Design base, one year; not Pro or Personal | Reconstruct from the mesh and export STEP or IGES. Base exports these formats but cannot import external STEP/IGES according to the edition table |
Use your licensed CAD app for all four paths. An example task is to upload the reconstructed STEP to Autodesk Fusion, confirm units and solid-body validity, add one dimensioned mounting hole or cut, save the result and compare it with the agreed part references. Autodesk explains imported design history ; this page has not carried out that task with any of the four scanner configurations. Adding a new feature to imported geometry does not recover the original designer's parameter history. If native parametric delivery is required, ask for a separate reconstruction and rebuild test.
To make a native edit task concrete, download the checked FreeCAD projects. Reopen the 5 mm hole project, change its named diameter to 7 mm and rebuild, then change the plate thickness. The practice model includes a feature history and separate STEP exports. Each scanner/reconstruction configuration still needs its own complete capture-to-edit test.
Raptor + QUICKSURFACE Lite: price the selected options separately
The Creality US original Raptor listing showed the base scanner at USD 879 and a separately selectable QUICKSURFACE Lite one-year option at USD 540 on October 14, 2026. That is not a license included in every Raptor purchase, a Scan Bridge package, or a confirmed delivered workflow total. Confirm that the quote selects both items and names the license term.
The original Raptor guide explains its mode-specific claims and preparation questions. Retain the mode's required markers when comparing untreated and coated surfaces. Capture coverage, alignment, mesh cleanup, fitting, solid closure, units and the final edit in your CAD app still need a representative-part test.
Otter + QUICKSURFACE Lite: two sellers and two currencies
On October 14, 2026, the selected Creality US Otter base was USD 899 and the separate QUICKSURFACE vendor Lite subscription was EUR 480 for one year. The earlier USD 719 Otter sale is historical. Do not apply the Raptor store's software-option price or bundle assumption to Otter, and do not add USD and EUR amounts without a documented conversion and buyer-region quote.
Use the Otter guide to prepare an infrared tracking test on your part. Feature-poor geometry, shiny or transparent surfaces, mesh cleanup and fitting still need tests on your own part; the documents do not settle those results. QUICKSURFACE's edition and workflow FAQ supports checking the required export and software environment before ordering.
VEGA + QUICKSURFACE Pro: untethered capture, not a workstation-free CAD system
On October 14, 2026, the EINSTAR US VEGA base listing was USD 1,999 and QUICKSURFACE's vendor Pro subscription was EUR 1,700 for one year. The software is separately purchased. Confirm the delivered VEGA edition and stock; a displayed device price is not proof of delivery or a complete CAD workflow cost.
The VEGA review separates point distance from accuracy. The StarVision support page documents the desktop software path, but the installed capture and reconstruction versions must be recorded in the demo. This chosen Pro reconstruction path requires a Windows workstation; onboard capture does not remove that cost or the CAD entitlement. HD detail capture, the mesh export, fitting, STEP closure and downstream import remain untested by us.
MIRACO Plus + Revo Design base: use the actual bundle and PMK handoff
On October 16, 2026, the selected MIRACO Plus + Revo Design (1 Year License) global-store variant was USD 2,467. The same storefront's base scanner was USD 2,199 on October 20, 2026. Do not add that device listing to a separate Revo Design license and label the sum as this bundle. The software coupon shown by the seller is not applied here. A global USD price is not a confirmed delivered US quote.
The MIRACO Plus support instructions document the PMK handoff and Revo Scan PC 5.4.12-or-newer condition. Verify coded-target and scan-marker visibility, use the matching marker/bar kit, transfer and process the data on PC, then form the mesh before CAD reconstruction. The Revo Design edition table distinguishes base mesh input and STEP/IGES export from Pro-only external CAD import. Installed versions, fitting, solid closure, independent dimensions and the final edit in your CAD app are still open test tasks.
What none of these prices includes yet
All four workflow totals remain unknown. The disclosed amounts identify particular device or software offers, not first-year ownership costs. Still unpriced are a suitable Windows workstation, a license for your CAD app, shipping and tax, fixtures and preparation supplies, training, support scope and labor. Scan Bridge accessories are excluded from the two base Creality configurations. Confirm VEGA's transfer/postprocessing workflow and the selected MIRACO PMK pack contents rather than assuming every accessory or desktop step is included.
Ask the seller to state software editions, license term, export rights, activation/renewal conditions and installed versions in writing. Record time for preparation, capture, alignment, cleanup, fitting, dimensional checks and work in your CAD app separately. Ask for separate results for the required CAD rebuild, dimensions on your part and any inspection requirement.
For turnkey or metrology-oriented alternatives, the scanner catalog includes other workflow classes; request a complete quote and part-test results for each. For vehicle parts, the car-parts guide adds a specimen pack with a recess, a long span and real surface finishes.
Budget for reconstruction software, not just capture
Compare software editions, formats and license questions
Scanning software produces a mesh. Rebuilding editable features usually takes a separate reverse-engineering application or manual modeling in CAD. Price that software with the scanner, and check it against your CAD system and version.
| Software | What it is for | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Geomagic Design X | Dedicated reverse-engineering application | Sold by quote; ask for the edition, term and maintenance in writing |
| QUICKSURFACE Lite / Pro | Reconstruction from mesh data with edition-specific tools and exports | The four configurations above name the exact term and separately priced options; check that your fitting and export task is covered |
| Revo Design / Revo Design Pro | Revopoint's reconstruction software, separate from Revo Scan | Base and Pro are not interchangeable; verify the edition's mesh input, CAD import and export rights |
| EXModel / EXModel Pro | SHINING 3D's mesh preparation and reconstruction software | Sold by quote; base and Pro editions differ in features |
| Autodesk Fusion | Mesh conversion and manual feature modeling inside CAD | Some conversion methods need an extension; check your plan |
Two cautions. A software price from one region is not a US quote. And a conversion step in Fusion's timeline does not recover the original designer's feature history; it creates new geometry from the mesh. An imported B-rep solid can still support direct edits and newly added features. See the three different CAD handoff checks before choosing native parametric delivery when a mesh reference or direct edit is enough.
Compare the complete quote
Open the complete line-item quote checklist
Ask each vendor to price these lines separately. Leave any unanswered line as Unknown rather than assuming it is included.
| Cost line | What to get in writing |
|---|---|
| Scanner and accessories | Exact SKU, calibration accessories, targets and warranty region |
| Capture and processing | Included license, computer requirements and upgrade terms |
| CAD reconstruction | Product, edition, seats, term, supported CAD version and export rights |
| Operation | Training, preparation supplies and operator time for your representative part |
| Renewal and support | Renewal cost, maintenance, repair route and file access after a subscription ends |
Compare first-year cost and yearly cost separately. Record the labor you saw in the demo, including rescans and manual modeling. Capture time alone says little about how many parts you can finish per week.
Calculate your first-year cost
Compare this setup with a service quote in the first-year buying-versus-service calculator.
Put the amounts from one complete quote into the worksheet. Use the separate Required computer or workstation field for a computer you must buy; do not also count it in accessories. Convert foreign-currency quotes to USD using your own dated rate before entering them; this calculator does not convert currencies. For a perpetual software license, put the purchase amount in the scanner/package line and only yearly maintenance in the annual software line. Count each quoted item once.
Missing prices remain blank. The calculator shows the known subtotal but will not label it a confirmed first-year total while a required amount is blank. Add the same annual workload and hourly cost to each candidate if you want to compare operator time. Use amounts from your own quotes and confirm renewal costs with the supplier.
Reverse-engineering demo brief
Prepare the full reverse-engineering demo brief
Copy this request, fill in the brackets and send the same version to every vendor.
Please demonstrate the exact scanner package, capture software and reconstruction edition/term on [part and material], [overall size], with [critical features]. The deliverable is [mesh reference / directly editable solid / native parametric model] opened in [application and version], and the next task is [named operation]. Surface preparation is [allowed / not allowed]; retain markers required by the selected mode. If comparing preparation, keep the other settings fixed, then validate the chosen process separately in [work area]. Check [named dimensions] against [reference and its uncertainty] with [agreed limits]. Show an independent repeat capture and the agreed CAD task. Return the raw scan, processed mesh, CAD file, comparison report, software versions and operator time by stage. Mark anything outside the quoted license or not demonstrated.
Accept or return the demo
- Open the delivered file yourself and confirm the units before measuring.
- For a mesh reference, complete the named reference task without claiming CAD features. For imported geometry, make the agreed direct edit or add the required feature. For a native parametric model, change the named parameter and rebuild dependent features. Record which task passed, rather than applying one rule to all file types.
- Look for missing areas and ask which geometry the operator filled in by hand.
- Check critical dimensions under the agreed alignment, then repeat on the independent rescan.
- Return any package where the required software or export rights are still unspecified. A failed demo is useful evidence; do not let it be hidden with extra smoothing.
To turn your requirements into a shortlist, choose mesh reference, a direct solid edit or native parameters. The selected output is shown and can be changed; you still supply the object, preparation and computing conditions. Use the shortlist to arrange a demo with your part and required tolerance.
Rebuild from functional datums
Start a reconstruction brief with the mounting plane, primary axis and orientation that make the part work. List hole centers, bearing seats, wall thickness and mating faces separately from the outside envelope. Keep the independent measurements with the mesh.
A prismatic part may be rebuilt with constrained sketches, planes and cylinders. Freeform surfaces need a stated fitting method and acceptable deviation. A hybrid part may use both. Identify where you choose a nominal design instead of reproducing wear. None of these routes recovers missing internal geometry from a photograph of the outside.
Accept three stages separately: visible captured geometry, the reconstructed model, and the edit requested in your CAD app. Use the CAD file exercise to see what an imported solid and a rebuilt parameter actually mean. Our example checks software geometry, not a scanned part.
Buy equipment or commission the same deliverable
Compare buying equipment with an equivalent service
Use the first-year buying-versus-service calculator to compare your complete setup with a quote for the same finished job.
Compare a delivered job, not a scanner price with a service's scan-only headline. Ask each service to separate capture, preparation, reconstruction, inspection, shipping or travel, and tax. A mesh quote and a native parametric model quote are different offers.
| Quote item | Ownership question | Service question |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat jobs | How many accepted jobs will this team complete each year? | Does the quote cover the same job count and repeat work? |
| Operator effort | Who captures, repairs, models and checks the result? | Which activities and revision rounds are included? |
| Access and logistics | Can the part be prepared and held in the workshop? | Is the work on-site, shipped or collected; who covers transport? |
| Acceptance | Which reference and final file operation will be checked? | What happens if a critical area or requested edit fails? |
| Ongoing cost | License renewal, supplies, calibration and training | Repeat setup, minimum order, travel and reconstruction charges |
Use the cost worksheet above with complete comparable figures. For occasional parts, difficult inaccessible geometry or a demanding acceptance method, a service demonstration may answer the purchase question before equipment does.
Download and prepare the service brief, then compare the returned quote with the recorded shortlist.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 3D scanner for reverse engineering cost?
The configuration notes above disclose exact device or bundle and license offers checked October 14, 2026. None is a complete workflow total. Add the workstation, your CAD app, accessories, tax, training, support and observed labor; request a full regional quote. Keep software renewal separate, and do not combine currencies or double-count a bundled license.
Can a 3D scanner create a CAD model directly?
Capture normally delivers points or a mesh. Reconstruction software or manual modeling supplies the CAD geometry. An imported solid may be directly editable without containing the original parameter history; a native parametric deliverable needs its own rebuild test. Ask the vendor to perform the task in your CAD app and report the time separately from capture.

Example decision brief
A bracket that needs a CAD reference
A 250 mm bracket can still depend on a 1 mm mounting hole. The useful result is a demo plan that checks this feature after cleanup and export, then opens the file at the agreed scale in your CAD application.
Still to confirm: preparation, computer and software configuration, full regional cost and actual scan results.
Planning example, not a completed scan.
