3D scanners for Mac

Match your Mac's chip and memory to the scanner's capture and processing software.

Updated

Start with the Mac you have

Choose the scanner app that supports your exact Mac. Check capture, processing and export, then complete your next action in CAD or a slicer. A Mac that opens a finished STL still needs scanner-compatible software to capture new data.

Apple silicon Macs

Write down the full chip name, memory and macOS version. M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max are different entries in the manufacturers' requirements. Use the named model and app below instead of assuming that every newer M-chip satisfies an older Pro requirement.

Use the minimum and recommended tiers as separate checks. Compare your Mac with the recommended configuration, then run a representative project.

EINSTAR: choose the matching program

Original EXStar and EXStar Hub have different Mac requirements.

EINSTAR 2

EXStar Hub 1.1.3-10
macOS Tahoe 26.2 or later

Minimum
M1 Pro, M2 Pro, M3, M4 or M5; 16 GB RAM.
Recommended
M1 Max/Ultra, M2 Max/Ultra, M3 Pro/Max/Ultra, M4 Pro/Max or M5; at least 24 GB RAM.

MacBook Air is not among the manufacturer's recommended models. These are Hub requirements for EINSTAR 2, not original EINSTAR.

Manufacturer sources

POP 4 and Revo Scan 6

Use the model-specific requirement and the ARM64 Mac build.

CrealityScan recommendations

These are the current performance guide's recommended Mac setups. Older manuals can list lighter configurations; keep the requirement level and software version beside each comparison.

Revo Metro: confirm the Mac build

The manual lists M-series processors, while the Mac download package is labelled x86_64. Confirm the exact build and any translation requirement before buying for this path.

Intel Macs

Check both the Intel or x86_64 package and the scanner models and features it supports.

  • POP 4: the product's platform note excludes macOS x86_64. Its Revo Scan 6 Mac download is ARM64. Use the POP 4 platform table before choosing it for an Intel Mac.
  • Original EINSTAR and EINSTAR 2: the current download pages name Apple silicon configurations. Original EXStar and EXStar Hub are different programs; use the one assigned to the scanner.
  • CrealityScan: choose Creality Scan in the download center , then choose macOS (Intel). At the source check, the Intel branch showed 3.3.46 and the Apple branch 4.3.2. The Sermoon S1 manual requires 4.1.2.8 or later, so the displayed Intel version does not meet that S1 requirement. Get confirmation of a suitable Intel build before ordering for that workflow.
  • MetroX and MetroX Pro: the Mac package is labelled x86_64, while the manual names M-series processors. That does not establish an Intel capture setup. Confirm the scanner, exact build and any translation requirement with the manufacturer.

The download center can initially show Creality Print, the printer slicer. Select Creality Scan before reading its versions. An older Intel branch and a current Apple branch may have different scanner or feature support.

Capture on the scanner first

Another route is to capture on a standalone scanner and move the result to the Mac. Check what the scanner can finish itself: saving the project, meshing and exporting the format you need are separate steps.

Open the actual export in your Mac application. Check scale and complete the intended task there. A mesh for printing, a mesh reference in CAD and an editable solid require different receiving workflows.

Browse models with on-scanner capture. This filters the capture host; it does not verify your Mac app, an export format or a complete CAD workflow. The scan-to-CAD guide separates those receiving-file paths.

Finish one job on your Mac

Use a representative object with the feature that matters to your work. Keep the app version, Mac configuration and chosen scanner mode beside the result.

  1. Connect the exact scanner and calibrate it using its instructions. Confirm that the intended mode is available in that Mac build.
  2. Capture the difficult area, then finish alignment and meshing on the machine you plan to use. Record completion time and any failure on this run.
  3. Save the project and reopen it. Export the agreed format at the correct scale.
  4. Open that file in your slicer, CAD or other receiving application. Perform the actual next action: inspect layers, measure a feature or edit the agreed solid.

For a phone display driven by a computer, the computer still does the work. A mirroring app does not remove the Mac's hardware or software requirements. Confirm a direct phone-capture mode separately if that is the setup you need.

Compare a setup

Open the catalog with the Mac processing filter. The filter checks the recorded desktop OS evidence; it does not check your processor, memory or the whole capture-to-file path.

Use the scanner selector to enter your object and required output. For costs, open the itemized kit worksheet. Its existing-computer option changes the purchase cost; use it only after checking that your Mac fits the chosen workflow.

If your scanner budget is below $1,000, compare the dated US packages and money left for extras. A low device price can still leave a computer, software or accessory to buy.

How we work

How we compare scanners

Official manuals, technical sheets and current product pages lead the evidence hierarchy. Missing fields stay visible as questions for the vendor.

  1. Define the object, output and acceptance method.
  2. Record calibration, software, workstation and operator.
  3. Compare the final deliverable under the same protocol.
  4. Keep failed scans and document every manual correction.

Published specifications describe manufacturer claims. A buyer test with your own object remains the final decision step.
