Start with the job

Pick the line that describes your work. Each one lists what to record in a demo.

• Mechanical parts and reverse engineering - Record whether the smallest feature survives meshing, whether scale holds after export and which software step turns the mesh into CAD. The reverse-engineering configurations separate capture, reconstruction and edits in your CAD app. Note if a step needs a license the quote does not include.
• Vehicle parts and interiors - Record tracking on dark plastic and painted panels, marker and spray use, and drift across the longest part. The car-parts guide has a four-part test pack.
• Large objects - Record capture time, the targets or markers used and an end-to-end check against a known dimension. Drift over a long scan is the usual failure.
• Inspection and quality control - Record the test standard, the calibration routine, volumetric accuracy and a repeat measurement on your own tolerance range. Collect this before comparing prices.
• Small parts and jewelry - Record whether fine edges and recesses survive on a reflective finish and how repeatable a second scan is. A desktop system on a turntable is often easier to repeat, and the models listed below are handheld, so treat them as a partial answer.

Define the final output first

Write down what the next person or program needs. A clean mesh for visualization, an STL for printing, a CAD reference and an inspection report are different deliverables. Check whether the included software can align, clean and export the scan, and which extra license is needed for feature extraction, parametric CAD or inspection reports.

Most scanners produce points or a mesh. An editable CAD model usually needs reconstruction software and skilled time, so price that step as part of the purchase. Distinguish a mesh reference, an imported B-rep solid that supports the required direct edit, and a native parametric model with a working feature history. A STEP file without the original history can still be directly editable; it does not promise the original design intent. The CAD handoff checks test each deliverable separately.

Match the scanner to the object range

List the smallest and largest objects you expect to scan, plus the smallest feature that must survive. Field of view, working distance and tracking method decide how quickly an operator covers an object. A wide capture area helps with body panels and interiors. Small components usually need a closer working distance, a turntable or a scanner built for fine detail.

Ask the vendor to scan the difficult object you actually care about, not only their demo piece. A smooth black part, polished metal, a deep pocket or a repeating pattern exposes tracking and preparation problems that a textured sample hides.

Treat accuracy and resolution as separate questions

Accuracy is how closely a measurement matches a reference under stated conditions. Resolution, or point distance, is how finely the surface is sampled. A smaller number on a product page does not guarantee a more useful model, and some pages publish resolution without any accuracy figure.

Ask how each figure was measured, in which mode, on what object size and at what distance, and whether targets or spray were used. For inspection work, ask for the test standard, the calibration routine and volumetric accuracy, which describes how error grows with object length.

Plan for difficult surfaces

Dark, reflective and transparent surfaces reduce capture quality. Laser and infrared modes behave differently on the same part, and some jobs still need scanning spray, targets or controlled lighting. Preparation adds cost and time, and it may be off-limits for finished, delicate or customer-owned parts. Record whether each vendor needed it.

Check the complete computing workflow

Review the supported operating systems, GPU, memory, connection and storage requirements. Alignment, meshing and export usually load the computer more than capture does. An all-in-one scanner still needs a way to move and back up large projects.

During the demo, open the export in your normal downstream application, check scale and units, and finish the next step. This catches format and license limits before you pay.

Compare support as part of the product

For production work, support affects downtime. Confirm the warranty region, the company that handles repairs, the calibration interval, training options and the response channel. If a reseller sells the scanner, get in writing who handles technical support and returns.

A useful demo ends with your deliverable

Send the vendor or reseller a short test brief before the call.

1. Describe the object dimensions, material, color and surface finish.
2. Mark the smallest feature and the tolerance that matters.
3. State whether targets or removable spray are acceptable.
4. Describe the environment, including indoor or outdoor use and available space.
5. Name the computer and downstream software you plan to use.
6. Request the raw scan, the processed mesh and the final required export.
7. Record preparation, capture, cleanup and correction time separately.
8. Ask for the full package price, recurring software cost, warranty and support route.

A useful test ends with a file your team can use. Keep the raw and processed files, then compare vendors against the same pass/fail rules.

Keep crossed/parallel laser capture separate from full-field and auto-turntable modes. The laser path uses markers; test any feature-based alternative only in its documented mode.

Separate on-device, wireless and wired operation and the Laser HD/IR Rapid workflow. Any marker-free hybrid behavior depends on the selected software mode and part reference.

Sermoon P1 decision notes

Choose single/parallel/crossed laser or near/far NIR explicitly. Laser uses marker/global-marker tracking; geometry/texture options belong to the NIR route.

Show the critical area in the chosen mode and complete processing/export on the actual quoted host. Confirm accessories, software release, workstation needs and the editable-CAD reconstruction path; do not transfer later Sermoon revisions into this record.
